Akpetki forms one of two sections of the Sudochie-Akpetki State Nature Reserve, a protected area spanning the Muynak, Kungirat, and Takhtakupyr districts of Karakalpakstan near the shrunken southern Aral Sea. The Akpetki section alone covers close to 196,000 hectares of linked lakes, riparian forest, and desert, within a combined reserve area of more than 280,000 hectares. The wetlands are an important refuge for waterbirds, including Dalmatian pelicans, pink pelicans, little cormorants, flamingos, great crested grebes, pied avocets, and mute swans, several of which are listed in Uzbekistan's Red Book. The area's hydrology is closely tied to the fate of the Aral Sea: the adjoining Lake Sudochie once covered about 350 square kilometers when fed by Amu Darya channels, shrank to roughly a quarter of that size by 1972 as irrigation diverted the river, and was later partly revived using redirected drainage water, leading to the creation of the Sudochie ornithological reserve in 1991 as the forerunner of today's protected area.
