Arany Sas pharmacy museum
The Golden Eagle Pharmacy was the first pharmacy in Buda, after the expulsion of the Turks, founded in 1687 by Ferenc Ignác Bösinger in the building numbered 1-2 on today's Dísz Square. Between 1687 and 1696 the pharmacy moved to number 6 on Dísz Square. Bösinger also opened a branch pharmacy in Víziváros, which later became known as the Black Bear Pharmacy.
The Golden Eagle was originally named the Golden Unicorn, and was renamed only in 1740 by its then owner, János Hinger. The pharmacy could also bear the “city” title, and its signboard displayed the coat of arms of Buda. It was relocated several times, being found on several numbers on Tárnok Street: first number 16, then between 1735-54 number 18, then it moved to number 8. In 1922 it was placed at its present location, number 18 Tárnok Street.
Among its owners were notable figures such as Bálint Werner, Ferenc Seyler, the Ungár family, and from the 1920s István Éllő. In 1966 it was attached to the Semmelweis Museum of Medical History as a pharmacy‑history unit. Restored to its original condition, its rooms opened in 1974 as the Golden Eagle Pharmacy Museum, whose permanent exhibition is “Pharmacy in the Renaissance and Baroque Period”.
