Avdalaz Castle is an ancient hilltop site near the village of Ayazini in Afyonkarahisar province, a region that formed part of the heartland of ancient Phrygia. Rather than a medieval fortress in the usual sense, the site is classified as a Phrygian settlement and is registered on Turkey's cultural heritage inventory. It lies within a wider landscape famous for Phrygian rock-cut monuments, including the carved tombs and chamber façades found around Ayazini, placing Avdalaz among the network of highland settlements the Phrygians established across this volcanic tuff plateau more than two millennia ago. The site's elevated, rock-dominated position reflects a settlement pattern typical of Phrygian communities in the region, who favored naturally defensible outcrops. Though far less visited than the better-known Phrygian valley sites nearby, Avdalaz Castle belongs to the same archaeological landscape and adds to the picture of how Phrygian society used and shaped the rugged terrain of this part of central Anatolia.
