Babakale Mosque stands in Babakale, a village in Çanakkale's Ayvacık district that marks the westernmost settlement on mainland Turkey. It belongs to a small fortified complex built around 1729 under Ottoman rule, when a coastal castle, a bathhouse, a bazaar, and a fountain were constructed together with the mosque to anchor a new harbor settlement on this remote stretch of Aegean coast. The site itself is older, noted in the mid-16th-century Kitab-ı Bahriye, the maritime guide compiled by the Ottoman admiral and cartographer Piri Reis, though the settlement only took the name Babakale in 1912. The harbor built below the fortress turned the village into a trading stop for the surrounding area, and the mosque has remained in continuous use as the religious center of this small coastal community ever since, standing alongside the castle as one of the defining historic structures of the village.
