Bektauata is a granite massif in Aktogay district, Karaganda region, about 70 kilometres north of Balkhash city, protected as a state zoological nature sanctuary. The massif formed when a granite intrusion was exposed by the erosion of the softer rock around it, producing an isolated highland roughly 15 kilometres long and 11 kilometres wide that rises sharply from the surrounding steppe. It includes six named summits, the highest being Bektauata itself at 1,214.3 metres, along with Sarykulgha, the two Konyrkulzha peaks, Karashokhy and Zhaltas. Wind and water erosion have carved the exposed granite into unusual shapes that have long drawn visitors and climbers, while small pockets of forest survive in sheltered spots, forming plant communities distinct from the open steppe around the massif. Its dramatic rock scenery and relative isolation have made it one of Karaganda region's better-known natural landmarks outside its cities.
