Bobotog National Nature Park was established on 4 March 2022 in the Uzun district of Surxondaryo region, covering part of the Bobotog mountain range that runs for about 125 kilometers along the Uzbekistan-Tajikistan border between the Surxondaryo and Kofarnihon rivers. Its lower and middle slopes are dominated by extensive pistachio woodland, with more than 36,000 hectares of forest spread across a protected area of over 65,000 hectares, while almond and other fruit trees grow at elevations of 800 to 900 meters. Wildlife surveys list 66 animal species, including sixteen mammals, thirty-four birds, fourteen reptiles and two amphibians; spring counts in the park have recorded jackals, foxes and hares among the more frequently sighted mammals. The park was created to protect this dry, low-mountain pistachio landscape, one of the characteristic habitats of southern Uzbekistan, and to regulate the use of its wild pistachio stands.
