Çanakkale City Museum
Çanakkale City Museum and Archive is a city museum located in Çanakkale. The museum building was purchased by the Çanakkale Municipality in 2004 and, after restorations, opened in 2009.
History
The museum building was constructed in the 1800s, like other structures on Çarşı Street, with the ground floor intended for shops and the upper floor for residential use. The building, which changed hands many times and was used as a commercial space and residence, reflects the original civil architecture of the period. The third floor of the museum building located on Fetvane Street was added in 1936 and began operating as "Emek Hotel" that same year. As a 20‑room hotel it served this purpose for 46 years, after which it operated again as a shop for a long period. After the building began to lose its distinctive structure and fell into a derelict state, it was purchased by the Çanakkale Municipality in 2004 and restored; preparations for the establishment of the museum and archive began in June 2007, and on 6 March 2009 it opened to visitors under the name "Çanakkale City Museum and Archive".
About the Museum
The museum holds an important place in comprehensively narrating historical events that occurred in Çanakkale and reflecting the city's cultural past and structure.
On the museum's ground floor there is the "Eyüp Görgüler Temporary Exhibition Hall" featuring temporary exhibitions on topics related to the city's history and culture. The upper floor, consisting of permanent exhibitions, is divided into two rooms called "History Book" and "City with Memories". In the first room, panels narrating the mythology and legends of Troy and the Çanakkale Wars are displayed together with several findings from the ancient city of Abidos and the Çanakkale War.
In the second hall, many and various cultural, traditional antique objects and items donated by the city's residents to the museum are exhibited together with their stories; panels containing information about migrations, population, education, customs, handicrafts and the city's history are also displayed. More than 300 pieces are exhibited in the museum.
In the meeting hall located on the third floor of the museum, events, conferences and seminars are organized as part of the weekly "City Talks" held every Wednesday, depending on the theme of the temporary exhibitions, and documentary screenings and music performances are held.
