Castle of Ortahisar
Ortahisar Castle is not a built fortress but a single, striking natural outcrop of soft volcanic tuff rising around 86 meters above the town of Ortahisar, in the Ürgüp district of Nevşehir province at the heart of Cappadocia. Over centuries, people carved multiple levels of rooms, staircases, tunnels and passages directly into the rock, creating an interconnected complex that served both as a refuge and as living and storage space. Traces of Roman and Byzantine activity have been found in and around the formation, and local tradition holds that it was used in the early Christian era as a place of retreat and shelter, later serving residents as a defensive refuge in times of danger. Many of its hollowed-out chambers were put to a more everyday use as cold-storage rooms, ideal for keeping apples, potatoes, quinces and other produce from Cappadocia's long-established orchards and farms. The exact date the rock was first shaped by hand remains unknown.
