Cinema Ala-Too
Cinema Ala-Too opened in the early 1960s on Bishkek's central square and is recognized as the oldest and largest movie theater in Kyrgyzstan. Its design reflects the Soviet modernist style of the period: a curved, concave facade carries bas-relief sculpture depicting cosmonauts and other emblematic figures of the Soviet era, work that has since earned the building protected status as a cultural monument. For decades it served as the capital's principal venue for film screenings and public gatherings tied to the square it faces. In more recent years the interior has been updated with digital projection and 3D screening equipment, allowing the historic building to keep functioning as an active cinema rather than becoming a purely decorative relic. Alongside the square's monuments and government buildings, Cinema Ala-Too is one of the clearest surviving examples of mid-twentieth-century Soviet civic architecture in central Bishkek.
