Dombaycıoğlu Han
Dombaycıoğlu Hanı is an Ottoman-era commercial building located in the district of Akhisar, Manisa province. It was built in 1823 by Dombaycıoğlu Mehmet Ağa, registered in 1963, and placed under protection as a cultural heritage in 1980. Since 1995, the han has continued to be used by renting out its rooms; although it partially collapsed due to neglect over time, it was restored through the initiatives of the Akhisar Trade Exchange. Approximately 2 million TL was spent on the restoration, and today the han houses seven rooms and nine shops where exchange members can hold meetings.
History
Dombaycıoğlu Hanı was constructed in 1823 by Dombaycıoğlu Mehmet Ağa, parallel to the intensification of commercial activities in Akhisar during the Ottoman period. The building was used for merchants' accommodation, animal sheltering, and goods storage. It is the second inner-city han that has survived to the present day after the Paşa Hanı belonging to the Sarı Ahmet Paşa Complex in the city center.
The han served travelers and merchants coming to the city in the Ottoman period; the coffeehouse and shops on the ground floor also became a meeting point for the local population. In the 19th century, it retained its importance within the growing trade volume in Akhisar and integrated with the surrounding traditional market fabric.
Architecture
Dombaycıoğlu Hanı possesses the characteristics of the Anatolian inner-city han typology. The building is surrounded by rooms arranged around a central courtyard. These rooms historically served merchants' lodging, goods storage, and animal sheltering. Shops and coffeehouses are on the ground floor, while accommodation rooms are on the upper floors.
Some rooms on the north and west wings of the building are arranged to be accessible both from the courtyard and from the street. This feature has allowed the caravanserai to adapt to both inward‑facing and outward‑open usage modes. In the façade arrangement, stone and brick materials reflecting the architectural characteristics of the period were chosen. In the architectural development of the caravanserai, the layering of different construction techniques can be observed, which places the building in the position of a work with historic documentary value.
The caravanserai has undergone various interventions in different periods. The alteration of the building’s façade openings and the addition of annexes have led to a partial disruption of the original spatial arrangement. For this reason, the caravanserai has been placed under protection within the urban site area.
Within the framework of the Conservation‑Purpose Zoning Plan approved in 2011, it was evaluated together with the Central Bazaar and various proposals for the restoration of the caravanserai were developed. In 2016, with contributions from the Akhisar Trade Exchange, a budget of 2 million TL was allocated and the building began to be restored. After the restoration, the caravanserai was re‑functionalized with meeting rooms and trade units; the building, which includes seven rooms and nine shops, was reopened on 13 March 2018 with the participation of Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu, then President of the Turkey Chambers and Exchanges Association.
