Dornyay Béla Museum
Named for the naturalist and local historian Dr. Béla Dornyay (1887–1965), this museum in Salgótarján documents the history and natural heritage of the surrounding Nógrád region. Its centerpiece is a permanent historical exhibition, opened in 2024 under Hungary's state-backed Genius heritage program after roughly 100 million forints in support, covering some 360 square meters across fourteen thematic chapters. The display traces the story of the Salgótarján industrial basin and the Palóc population native to the area, alongside the workers who arrived from across the former Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and beyond during the region's industrial and urban expansion. The museum also maintains a separate Mining Exhibition devoted to the history of coal extraction in Nógrád county between 1848 and 1992, reflecting the heavy industry that shaped Salgótarján's growth for more than a century.
