Fairy Tale Canyon
This canyon sits a few kilometers from the lakeside village of Tosor on the southern side of Lake Issyk-Kul, where a band of reddish sandstone has weathered into an unusually sculptural landscape. Rain, wind and seasonal frost have cut the rock into narrow gullies, rounded hollows and tall freestanding ridges, and the warm color of the stone ranges from pale pink to deep rust depending on the light and the mineral bands exposed. Local guides describe many of the outcrops by the animals, mythical creatures or fortifications they resemble, and the comparison to the Great Wall of China is often used for one of the longer ridgelines. A network of informal paths lets visitors move between the different chambers of the canyon on foot without any technical climbing, reaching a rim from which Issyk-Kul and the surrounding mountains are visible. The site is maintained as a small paid attraction, with the best viewing conditions generally found around sunrise and sunset.
