Gazi Yakup Bey Mosque
The Gazi Yakup Bey Mosque, in the Çardak area of the Lapseki district in Çanakkale province, is named after Yakup Bey, an Ottoman naval and coastal commander who served under Sultans Mehmed II and Bayezid II and briefly governed the Sancak of Gelibolu while overseeing the fleet. He personally directed the construction of the Kilitbahir Fortress on the Dardanelles and, in 1484, established a charitable foundation endowing an extensive complex across Gelibolu, Kilitbahir, Malkara, and Lapseki/Çardak, including two mosques, a madrasa, a school, a soup kitchen, a mausoleum, caravanserais, bathhouses, storehouses, wells, and fountains. The Arabic-language deed recording this foundation is considered a valuable source for fifteenth-century Ottoman history. The mosque that bears his name continues to be the site of annual commemorations marking the Ottoman conquest of Gelibolu and the historic crossing of Turkish forces from Anatolia into Rumelia.
