Gyömrő Lake Bath, in the town of Gyömrő in Pest County, developed out of a flooded clay pit that had originally supplied a local brickworks. In 1923, an analysis of water seeping up from underground found it had medicinal mineral properties, prompting Dezső Okulicsányi-Kuthy, the medical professor who had carried out the study, to purchase the land and convert it into a public bathing lake. Historical accounts describe a water surface of around 40,000 square meters during its early-twentieth-century heyday, with boats, swimming rings and gymnastics equipment available to visitors arriving from Budapest's Keleti station roughly an hour away. The lake today maintains an average summer water temperature near 23 degrees Celsius, with depths ranging from about 1.5 to 4.5 meters, and its water quality is regularly rated excellent, drawing a steady flow of local swimmers through the warmer months.
