The Hansági Múzeum in Mosonmagyaróvár takes its name from the Hanság, the extensive marshland that once covered much of the surrounding region before nineteenth- and twentieth-century drainage works turned it into farmland. Founded in 1882, the museum is one of the older provincial collections in northwest Hungary and occupies a building on Fő utca in the town center. Its holdings cover local and regional history, archaeology, ethnography, and fine and applied art, including paintings by Hungarian artists such as Ferenc Szalay and Jenő Maticska, alongside a photographic archive and a research library. Through the twentieth century the museum built up its professional staff and collections, with records showing specialist curators employed from at least the mid-1950s, and it continues to serve as the principal museum documenting the history and vanished wetland landscape of the Hanság area.
