The Hárs-hegy cavity is a cave located in the Budai Mountains within the Danube–Ipoly National Park, in Budapest District II.

Description

From the summit of Nagy-Hárs-hegy to the east, on the steep north‑northeast side of the hill, it opens about 50 m east‑northeast of the abandoned quarry under the quarry’s waste pit. From Szépjuhászné to the summit of Nagy-Hárs-hegy, the entrance is marked by a yellow stripe tourist sign.

The dome‑shaped cavity formed in mountain‑foot debris, further in Oligocene sandstone. At the end of the cave the upper Triassic Dachstein limestone appears. Formerly the cave was 2 m in diameter and 3 m long, but homeless people living in it expanded it to 6 m long and 4–5 m wide.

In literature the cave also occurs under the names Hárs-hegyi gömbfülke (Kocsis, Turi 2008), Hárshegyi Kis-barlang (Kordos 1984), Hárshegyi kis barlang (Bertalan 1976), Hárs-hegyi-sziklaüreg (Kordos 1984), Hárshegyi sziklaüreg (Bertalan 1976) and Ságvári ligeti kis barlang (Kordos 1984).

Research history

The 1956 guidebook Budai hegyek útikalauz mentions a small cave, which is touched by the cart track leading from Ságvári‑liget to the yellow square tourist sign. The steep and rocky cart track led near the stone quarry up to the tourist path. The 1957 edition of the book Budai hegyek útikalauz repeats the 1956 mention.

According to card number 32 of the manuscript titled Magyarország barlangleltára, completed in 1976, the other name of Hárshegyi sziklaüreg is Hárshegyi kis barlang. In Budapest District II, the cave is located 460 m east‑east‑northeast from the summit of Hárs-hegy. The entrance to the cavity is free. The cave’s length is 2 m and its depth 1 m. Artificial excavation. It is in slope debris, in the Dachstein limestone area and is an insignificant artificial cavity. The part of the manuscript concerning the cave was written based on one literary work.

In the national cave list of the book *Caves of Hungary* published in 1984, the cave located in the Buda Hills appears under the name Hárs-hegyi-sziklaüreg with the variant names Ságvári ligeti kis barlang and Hárshegyi Kis-barlang. Related to the list, the geographical location of the caves of the Danube‑Upland Mountains is shown on a 1:500 000 scale map indicating the cave’s geographical position. From 2007 to 2008 the Anubisz Cave Exploration Group and the Adrenalin Cave Exploration Association conducted research.
