Hatıroğlu Mosque, a historic mosque located in Hacı Mansur Neighborhood in the district of Melikgazi, Kayseri Province, Turkey. Although it is accepted that it was built in 1271 by Hatıroğlu Eşref Bey, some sources state the construction date as 1222. Built in Seljuk architecture, the mosque today bears characteristics of 16th‑century Ottoman architecture. The mosque has historical significance, especially being associated with the 1276 rebellion of Hatıroğlu Şerafettin Bey against the Mongols.

History

Hatıroğlu Mosque was constructed in the 13th century, when the Anatolian Seljuk State fell under Mongol domination. The patron of the mosque, Hatıroğlu Eşref Bey, is described in some sources as a Seljuk commander and in others as an administrator serving under the Mongols. In 1276, Hatıroğlu Şerafettin Bey launched a rebellion against the Mongols in Kayseri, but the uprising failed and Şerafettin Bey was executed. This event made the mosque one of the symbols of resistance in Anatolia.

Architectural Features

The mosque was originally built in the Seljuk architectural style. It has a square‑plan prayer hall covered by a single dome. On the north side there is a secondary prayer area covered by three small domes. Cut stone material was used in the structure. Additions and restorations carried out in the 16th century during the Ottoman Empire gave the mosque its present form.

Hatıroğlu Mosque, besides being a place of worship, is part of Kayseri’s historical and cultural heritage.
