Hollókői Protected Landscape Area
The Hollókő Protected Landscape Area was established in 1977, a landscape protection zone under the nature conservation management of the Bükk National Park Directorate in the area of the village of Hollókő in Nógrád County. Its area is 1,495 km², which includes the protected village part of Hollókő-Ófalu and the Hollókő Castle, and it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1987. The Bükk National Park Directorate has designated a castle tour trail, marked in green and equipped with 23 informational boards, which presents the cultural and natural values of the area.
Castle tour trail
The first section of the castle tour trail leads from the parking lot to the Hollókő Castle. After the visit, the trail leads downhill from the castle to Ófalu, guiding the visitor. Both sites are within the World Heritage area. One branch of the trail returns to the parking lot as a biological trail surrounding Várhegy. After visiting Ófalu, the other end of the trail ends in Hollókő Újfalu.
The cultural landscape of Hollókő has been shaped by human hands since ancient times. The hilly region represents a mosaic-like landscape, where typical habitats characteristic of the Cserhátra area can be found. Cyclists can travel the 6 km long bike path that reaches every point of the village. For a rest, it is worth stopping in front of the locals' gates and listening to their stories about old customs, traditions, and local products. The indigenous people, proud of their home, welcome visitors' interest with friendliness.
