The István Türr Museum in Baja traces back to 1936, when a dedicated picture gallery was established in the town through the joint effort of collector Imre Oltványi in Budapest and local organizer Ferenc Miskolczy. Rather than being assembled by purchase alone, the collection grew out of donations from artists, private collectors, municipal bodies and state institutions, giving it an unusually broad cross-section of Hungarian painting from the 1930s. Works by painters such as Imre Ámos, Róbert Berény, József Egry, Gyula Hincz and József Rippl-Rónai entered the holdings this way. The institution carries the name of István Türr, a Baja-born military officer who joined Garibaldi's campaigns for Italian unification and later, after 1867, became involved in reviving the regional economy of Bácska. Today the museum combines this fine-art legacy with local history and archaeology collections tied to the Baja area.
