The Kanizsai Dorottya Museum in Mohács was established in 1923 and takes its name from Dorottya Kanizsai, the noblewoman remembered for organizing the burial of the dead after the 1526 Battle of Mohács. Its core task has always been the historical and ethnographic study of the Mohács district, and it functions as Hungary's principal institution for documenting the material and spiritual heritage of the South Slavic communities—Croats, Serbs and Slovenes—who resettled the depopulated region in the 17th century. Its holdings include traditional costumes, painted and carved furniture, Mohács's distinctive black and glazed pottery, and a collection connected to the town's carnival busó masks. Supporting archives hold tens of thousands of photographs and a specialist library founded in 1931. A separate section of the museum is devoted to the history of the 1526 battle itself.
