Kis-Kő-hegyi Shelter
The Kis-Kő-hegy stone cavity is one of the cavities located in the Visegrád Mountains in the area of Pomáz, within the Danube–Ipoly National Park.
Description
It is about 300 metres from the Kő-hegy tourist house, in the large bend of the yellow‑signposted road leading north, on the left, western side, about 10 metres from the road and higher up. The gently sloping hillside here has partly collapsed and revealed a several‑metre cavity in the rock wall.
Ézsiás György and others observed during their January visit that the air in the small open cavity was warmer than in its surroundings, but it was not steaming. A locally significant, small‑size cavity.
In 1993 the cavity was mentioned for the first time in the literature under the name Kis-Kő-hegyi-kőfülke. In the literature the cavity also occurs under the names Kis-Kő-hegyi-fülke and Kis Kő-hegyi-kőfülke.
Research history
Budai Kornél discovered it. Ézsiás György and others visited the cavity in January 1991. There is no data on earlier research. In a manuscript written by Kárpát József in 1991 it is mentioned that the Kis Kő-hegy stone cavity (Szentendre) is of unknown size.
In the manuscript titled *Magyarország nemkarsztos barlangjainak lajstroma* written by Eszterhás István in 1993 it can be read that in the Visegrád Mountains, in the 4900 cave‑survey area, at Pomáz is located the Kis-Kő-hegyi-kőfülke. The cave formed in the andesite tuff is of unknown size. The compilation lists the 520 objects (478 caves and 42 artificial cavities) in Hungary that are formed in non‑karst rock and were known up to the end of 1993. In Hungary 8 caves or artificially created cavities called caves have formed in andesite tuff. In the Visegrád Mountains 33 caves have formed in non‑karst rock. In 1996 Eszterhás István and others described it.
In the manuscript bibliography of Hungary's non-karst caves, titled "Bibliography of Hungary's Non-Karst Caves," dated November 12, 2001, the Kis Kő-hegyi-kőfülke is listed in the cave name index. The cave name index mentions 2 literary works that deal with the cavity. Item 364 does not mention it, item 363 mentions it. In the study published in the 2014 Karst Development, it is stated that the Kis-Kő-hegyi-kőfülke located in Pomáz has not been surveyed. The cave is one of the 101 caves of the Visegrád Mountains.
