In 1966, with the commissioning of the Almus Dam, the waters of the Yeşilırmak, which no longer flood, no longer reach the lake. In 1980, a barrier was built on the eastern side to reduce the lake's floodplain. A drainage channel was opened toward the Yeşilırmak. The lake has not been completely drained; the dried areas have been turned into fields by villagers.

Conservation

274 hectares of the lake and its surroundings have been declared a Wildlife Development Area, totaling 1,170 ha. The area contains two bird observation towers and a guest house. Over time, 108 bird species live in the aquatic area.

Kaz Lake has a 180‑hectare floodplain. It is a stopover site for migratory birds. There is no pollution because no industrial facilities can be established around the lake.
