Malyi Taldykol is a shallow natural lake within the city limits of Astana, part of the wider Taldykol wetland system that once bordered the Esil River floodplain. Unlike its larger neighbor, Bolshoi Taldykol, it was not used as a sewage outfall during the lake system's transformation in the 1960s and again during the capital's rapid growth in the 2010s, which helped it keep a comparatively healthier ecosystem. It is valued by birdwatchers as a stopover for waterfowl, including ferruginous ducks and white-eyed pochards, species listed in Kazakhstan's Red Book, along with cormorants and pelicans. Encroaching construction, drainage works, and runoff from surrounding development have nonetheless degraded water quality and left residents complaining of swamp odors after rain. Environmental groups such as SOS Taldykol have pushed the city administration and the Ministry of Ecology to adopt a restoration roadmap, and the lake has occasionally doubled as an emergency water source during fires in the capital.
