The Markazi Reservoir is a lake in Markaz, Heves County, at the southern foot of the Mátra. It is the cooling lake of the Mátra Power Plant. It is popular among sailors, surfers and anglers.

Geography

The 154‑hectare lake, whose deepest point is 14–15 metres, is fed by the waters of the Malom Creek, the Zsidó Creek and the Hatra Creek, which have been raised. Its water is discharged by the Nyiget Creek.

History

The 14th‑century village of Markaz was surrounded by earth ridges in a triangular shape, whose sides were crossed by a creek bed and water ditches. In 1962 the local agricultural cooperative created a fishing lake in the area enclosed by the raised ridges. In 1968 the lake next to the Mátra Power Plant was also filled, and the two lakes merged.
