Meszes Cave is one of the caves located in the Gerecse Mountains in the Danube–Ipoly National Park, within the Gerecse Landscape Protection Area.

Description

At the southern edge of Gerecse, in the outskirts of Tatabánya, next to the Polish Cave on the eastern‑northeastern part of the Kő Hill plateau, it has a vertical entrance oriented along the axis.

In 2010 the cave was called Meszes Cave for the first time in its literature. The cave also appears in its literature under the name Meszes-gödör (Polacsek, Ba 2019).

Research History

During the cave visits on 31 January 2009, 28 March 2009, 31 May 2009, 30 August 2009, 31 October 2009, 30 December 2009, 30 January 2011, 29 April 2011, 30 July 2011, 29 October 2011, 9 February 2014, 8 March 2014, 1 July 2014 and 26 December 2014 the Gerecse Cave Research and Conservation Association determined that there were no bats inside.

The manuscript titled Tatabánya Cave Research 2018 states that Meszes-gödör is the last exploratory work of the Gerecse Cave Research and Conservation Association. The association left a large depression behind. The shaft dug at the bottom of the 25–30 m diameter basin allegedly reached a void around 2010, but Zsolt Polacsek did not see it and considers the inclusion of the site in the cave register a strong exaggeration.
