Nevvar Salih İşgören Great Mosque is a mosque under construction in the city of İzmir, Turkey. The mosque, commissioned by the Nevvar Salih İşgören Foundation, will be the largest mosque in the Aegean Region.

History

The works of the great mosque project, which emerged when Salih İşgören, founder of the Nevvar Salih İşgören Foundation, promised the then prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan that he would have a mosque built, started in August 2017. Ground improvement works were completed in the first quarter of 2018. As of April 2019, ninety percent of the structural construction was finished. After the structural construction was completed, the mosque was transferred to the Presidency of Religious Affairs. It is being built at a cost of approximately 100 million lira. The mosque construction, initially planned to be completed in 2022, stopped in 2020.

Architecture

The architect of the mosque, designed based on Ottoman architecture, is the same architect who prepared the project for the Beştepe Nation Mosque. Built on an area of fourteen decares, the mosque will have a capacity of fifteen thousand people. With this feature it will receive the title of the largest mosque in the Aegean Region. In the mosque's foundation, 1,257 fore piles and 680 jet grouts were driven. The main dome of the mosque, with an interior span of 42 m and an exterior span of 43 m, is the largest mosque dome in Turkey. The mosque has four minarets 92 m high. In addition, the mosque includes a parking lot for 240 vehicles.
