This museum in Bursa's Nilüfer district grew out of a private collection of roughly three hundred musical instruments gathered over many years by Hüseyin Parkan Sanlıkol, a locally well-known doctor and music enthusiast. Shortly before his death in 2015, he persuaded Nilüfer's mayor to turn the collection into a public museum, a project that was carried forward by his family and opened to visitors in August 2021 under the name of his son, Dr. Hüseyin Parkan Sanlıkol. Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol, a musicologist on the faculty of the New England Conservatory in Boston, has served as curator and project director, connecting the Bursa museum to international collections; in one notable addition, the New England Conservatory donated fifty-two rare instruments, some around four centuries old, to the museum's holdings, broadening its reach beyond Turkish instruments to music traditions from around the world.
