The acropolis of Olympos occupies the high ground above this ancient Lycian port city in the Kumluca district of Antalya province, within what is now Beydağları-Olympos National Park. Olympos ranked as the region's second most important harbor after Phaselis and held three votes in the Lycian Union, the federation of cities that once governed much of this coast; it is named in Lycian Union coinage from the 160s BC. Settled through the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods, the city overlooks a valley where excavations, underway since 2006, have uncovered churches, an episcopal palace, a bridge, mosaic floors and monumental tombs including that of the Lyciarch Marcus Aurelius Archepolis. Today the wooded hillside, long nicknamed the House of the Gods, lies along the Lycian Way long-distance trail, where paths wind past the scattered ruins up toward the acropolis itself.
