Perge Helenistik Kapı
The Hellenistic Gate stands at the southern edge of Perge, an ancient Pamphylian city about 18 kilometers east of Antalya in the Aksu district. It was built as part of the city's lower defensive circuit, a line of walls, towers and bastions raised in the Hellenistic period and later repaired under Roman and Late Antique rule. The gate opens directly onto the start of Perge's Colonnade Street, the long column-lined avenue that formed the city's backbone and was flanked by basilicas and shops. Perge grew into one of Pamphylia's wealthiest and most admired cities in antiquity, and its monumental approach through this gate set the tone for the grand urban plan beyond. Much of the gate and the adjoining fortification survives today, giving visitors one of the clearest impressions of how a major Hellenistic-Roman city in southern Anatolia announced itself to those arriving from outside its walls.
