Unnamed Mausoleum

This unnamed mausoleum lies within a necropolis about 45 meters southwest of the khanaka of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi in Turkistan and is dated to the 16th century. Unlike most monuments in the city's famous shrine complex, the identity of the person it was built for has never been established, so it is recorded simply as the 'nameless mausoleum.' Its design is partly subterranean: a crypt supported by four low, wall-mounted pointed arches carries a shallow dome, with the burial chamber entered through a low opening set beneath a pointed arch on the southeastern side. The above-ground portion of the structure has largely collapsed over the centuries, but the underground chamber survives in relatively good condition, its walls left unplastered. Despite its anonymity, the monument is classed as an architectural site of republican significance, valued as a representative example of medieval funerary construction within Turkistan's historic necropolis.
