Ramazan Pasha Mosque
Ramazan Pasha Mosque in central Aydın was first built in 1595 under the patronage of Ramazan Pasha, but the original structure was destroyed in the severe earthquake that struck Aydın in 1899. It was rebuilt in 1901 through the efforts of Sökeli Halil Pasha, using cut stone and decorated in the Baroque style fashionable in late Ottoman religious architecture. The mosque follows a square prayer hall plan, fronted by a son cemaat yeri, an entrance portico covered by three small domes. Beyond its religious function, the mosque holds a place in the city's modern history: during the Turkish War of Independence it served as a gathering point for meetings connected to local resistance against occupation. Still an active place of worship, it is one of the landmarks that reflects both Aydın's late Ottoman rebuilding after the 1899 earthquake and the city's role during the independence struggle.
