The Róth Miksa Memorial House and Collection is located in the buildings of the residence and workshop of the prominent creator of Hungarian glass painting and mosaic art between 1911 and 1944.

The building's history

The building at 26 Nefelejcs Street originally belonged to furniture maker Gelb Sámuel. Róth Miksa purchased it in 1911 and had it rebuilt according to the plans of Pecz Samu. At that time the three‑storey building in the inner courtyard was erected for the workshops.

During the Second World War the buildings first housed a German and then a Soviet military cartographic office. From 1948 the Honvéd Petőfi Academy operated here, training political officers for the Hungarian People's Army. The building fell increasingly into disrepair, became the workshop of the National Industrial Enterprise, and then served as a needy housing unit. On the upper floor of the street building, after nationalization, three rooms were left for Róth Miksa’s widow, Walla Jozefa, and his children Erzsébet, Amália and József.

After the regime change, partly through the intercession of Ráday Mihály, the family donated the father’s estate to Erzsébetváros so that a Róth Miksa Memorial House could be opened in their parental home. After extensive work the museum opened to visitors in November 1999.

The museum

On the first floor of the street building two permanent exhibitions were created: the house museum and the most important glass paintings and mosaic works of Róth Miksa that remained in the family. In the attic of the house the museum’s auxiliary rooms were arranged, including offices, an art‑object storage, and a conservator’s workshop. On the ground floor, in September 2005, the hall for temporary exhibitions opened, as well as the “Róth Salon” set up from Róth Miksa’s former study.

In the courtyard building, on the former workshop floor, an exhibition of works by Róth Miksa’s students and followers opened in the autumn of 2015.
