Şadırvanaltı Mosque
Şadırvanaltı Mosque or Şadırvan Mosque is a mosque located in the city of İzmir, Turkey.
History
Located in Kemeraltı and named after the fountain beneath it, Şadırvanaltı Mosque was commissioned in 1636 by Bıyıklıoğlu Mahmut. After several fires, it was repaired in 1815 and 1883. In 1834, a library and a time office (muvakkithane) were added to the mosque. The mosque’s minaret was restored in 1941.
In 2022, a 65‑year‑old fountain located in the square behind the mosque was demolished by a tradesman. The Governor’s Office and the Metropolitan Municipality announced that those responsible would be punished, and that the fountain, whose builder a half century ago is unknown, will be rebuilt.
Architecture
The Şadırbulaltı Mosque was built without a courtyard and with various shops on its ground floor, in accordance with the commercial district in which it is located. To the east of the mosque there is a single‑shaped minaret made of cut stone, and there are a fountain to the west and one to the north. The western fountain, which has eight columns, is larger and has a library above it.
