Savaria County Municipal Museum
The origins of this Szombathely museum go back to 1872, when the teacher Vilmos Lipp founded the Vas County Archaeological Society to gather and preserve the county's historical monuments, drawing heavily on Roman-era finds from the Savaria site alongside donations from private collectors. In 1900 the society merged into the broader Vas County Cultural Association, and its growing collection, initially crowded into rooms of the bishop's palace, prompted construction of a dedicated building that opened in 1908 as the Vas County Museum. The new "Kulturpalota" housed five departments covering the library, natural history, ethnography, fine art and antiquities. A further wing was added in 1910 to accommodate the expanding collections, and a lapidarium displaying stone monuments was incorporated during a 1939 renovation. The museum remains one of the principal repositories for the archaeology and cultural history of the Vas region.
