Sharg Bazaar
"The Sharg Bazaar" trade complex consists of 16 stalls, 3 large and 13 small
History
The design of the complex began in 1978, construction started in 1980 and the official opening of the bazaar took place in 1982. Initially the complex operated as a bazaar.
The initial design of "Sharg Bazaar" was carried out by the famous 1980s architects Uruzmaq Revazov, Pavel Yarinovski and Anatoliy Bessonov.
Deficiencies
According to a rare architectural style, although "Sharg Bazaar" was included in the list of nationally significant immovable historical and cultural monuments by a relevant decision of the Cabinet of Ministers in 2001, a thorough examination carried out in 2017 revealed that the operation of commercial objects of different purposes, continuous exploitation in a deteriorated natural state and neglect caused serious damage, cracks, wear, corrosion and deformations in the building. Taking these into account, it became necessary to implement engineering measures to improve the complex’s operational indicators, increase its durability and ensure normal functioning. After the thorough inspection, detailed design work began immediately and restoration work started in 2020.
Reconstruction
On 06 June 2022 the "Sharg Bazaar" complex was put into use after restoration and reconstruction. The President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva visited the facilities created in the complex. The original inscription at the entrance of "Sharg Bazaar" written in Cyrillic script was developed in the same calligraphy and changed to Latin script, and the signs and headings inside were redesigned to match the bazaar’s style.
It has been reported that 78 tenants will operate in the market. This means the creation of 300 new jobs.
The arches, which are the main attribute of the complex, have been designed according to the purpose of various food service objects. To ensure the comfort of buyers coming to the market, sections such as jewelry, handicraft fairs, a “Sandıqca” art pieces sales section, “Tamaşa”, snacks, cafes and restaurants, “Sehrli bazar”, workshops and other sections have each been gathered in separate arches and parts.
