Sharyngol Mosque
The Bilal Habsi Mosque in Sharyngol, a coal-mining district (sum) of Darkhan-Uul Province, was completed in 2019, making it one of the newer mosques built for Mongolia's ethnic Kazakh Muslim minority outside its traditional heartland in Bayan-Olgii Province. Sharyngol grew up around a large open-pit coal mine, and part of its workforce over the decades has come from Kazakh families who moved there for employment, forming a small but established Muslim community within an otherwise Buddhist-majority region. The mosque follows the Hanafi school of Sunni Islam and takes its name from Bilal al-Habashi, the companion of the Prophet Muhammad traditionally honored as Islam's first muezzin. As with other small-town mosques in Mongolia, the building serves both as a prayer hall and as an informal gathering point for Sharyngol's Muslim residents.
