The Szarvas-árki-sziklaeresz is a cave located in Budakeszi, in the Buda Hills within the Danube–Ipoly National Park.

Description

The cave is located in the outskirts of Budakeszi, at the lower end of the Szarvas-árok, at its ground level, about 50 m east of the former forestry fence next to the Kis-sziklafal, at an altitude of about 320 m above sea level. Its entrance is natural and oriented horizontally.

The wide rock formation was formed at the contact between Triassic dolomite and fine-grained Oligocene limestone. It is a horizontal, single-level, simple-shaped cave in which frost‑formed vaults can be observed. It is easily accessible and can be traversed without caving equipment. No permission is required for visiting.

Research History

On 7 July 1996, Sándor Kraus compiled the cave register sheet, which states that it is approximately 23 m long, about 20 m wide horizontally, about 5 m deep and has a volume of roughly 230 m³. The 1996 report included a photograph of the cave as well as the register sheet, which shows a schematic floor plan, a cave map and a cross‑section.

On 28 March 2005, Richárd Kovács edited the cave map, which depicts a floor plan, a longitudinal section and a cross‑section. For the preparation of the map, János Kovács surveyed the rock formation. The cave is located about 900 m northwest of the 95 km point of the planned B variant route of the western segment of the M0 motorway between the 10th main road and the 1st main road.
