Tari László Museum
The Tari László Museum is located in Csongrád at 2 Iskola Street, and opened on August 20, 1956. The institution has borne the name of dentist Dr. Tari László since 1988 and preserves and exhibits about ninety thousand archaeological, historical and ethnographic objects. Its first exhibition featured zoological, archaeological, local history and ethnographic materials, and in 1962 the so‑called Avar‑period Romeo and Juliet pair tomb found in Felgyő became part of the collection. From 1974 to 1994 the Kubikos permanent exhibition was presented. From 1983 to 2009 Dr. Judit Szűcs, a folklorist, was the museum director; under her leadership the Folk House at 1 Gyökér Street was created and opened to the public in 1985. In 1984 the museum’s material was used to furnish the Csongrád Fishermen’s House in the National Historical Memorial Park of Ópusztaszer. Between 2000 and 2004 four permanent exhibitions opened in the Iskola Street building: Children of the Earth, Bronze Sons, Centuries of Csongrád, Population of Csongrád, Presentation of Ellés Monastery. In 2024 a new permanent exhibition titled “Csongrád, the Flower of the Black Castle” was prepared, which was awarded the special prize for best visual presentation at the Year’s Exhibition ceremony by the Pulszky Society – Hungarian Museum Association in the same year. In addition, two rooms continue to serve for the presentation of temporary exhibitions.
