Tigranakert comprises the archaeological remains of an ancient city in the Aghdam district, believed to have been founded in the first century BC and named after the Armenian king Tigranes the Great, one of several cities across the wider region that bore his name in antiquity. The ruins were identified in the mid-2000s, and excavation that followed uncovered sections of the city wall, two early church buildings, part of one of the city's ancient quarters, and various tools and everyday objects from antiquity. The surrounding territory has since been designated a protected archaeological reserve, drawing several thousand visitors a year interested in its layered history spanning the Hellenistic period into the early medieval era. Ongoing excavation and conservation work continues to clarify the site's layout and chronology, and it remains one of the more substantial ancient urban sites documented in the wider South Caucasus region.
