The Tisza Lake Bird Sanctuary is a strictly protected natural value in the Tiszavalki basin, in the northern area of Lake Tisza, which has been included in the list of internationally recognised watershed habitats (Ramzar Convention) and is part of the UNESCO-granted Hortobagi National Park, which has been awarded the title of World Heritage Site.

Fish and wildlife

Lake Tisza is an artificially created body of water created by the construction of the Kiskörei Water Ladder. The flooding, which began in 1973, was originally planned to be carried out in three stages, but due to economic changes in the meantime, the last step (in which the amount of water stored would have been tripled) was abandoned.

The reservoir's water surface is used for nature conservation purposes in the north, recreation in the south, water sports and ecotourism in the middle.

Waterbird habitat

The bird reserve is a strictly protected natural value, accessible only by boat, but not during the off-peak period. Low-power boat-powered boat-powered tours are also organised in the area, but only sailing boats are allowed to enter. Thanks to the protection, a unique bird world has emerged in a European context. Many bird species have settled back in the area but have also become a stopover for migratory species.

Visiting

Boat and canoe tours of poros and sarud are available, and birdhouses in the most important places are available.
