Törpe Pothole
The Törpe-zsomboly is a cave located in the Budai Landscape Protection Zone of the Danube–Ipoly National Park, in the Buda Hills.
Description
It is situated on the outskirts of Remeteszőlős, at the top of Remete Hill, about 400 m east of the summit, on an open field on a small subsidiary summit, on a clearing at an altitude of 410 m above sea level, with a natural, oval‑shaped, vertically oriented entrance measuring 2.4 × 1.7 m. The entrance opens in an easily reachable place. The simplest access is from the stop of bus 157 at Budaliget, Géza fejedelem útja, following the blue cross tourist sign. The entrance is located about 70 m from the entrance of Nagysuty Cave, on the DNy side.
Through the small entrance one can reach a 3 m deep stepped shaft, which is easily climbable. On the east side of the shaft, among the rocks, a tree grows. It was formed in Triassic dolomite along a tectonic fissure, due to corrosion, dissolution below the karst water level and freeze‑thaw disintegration. The simply shaped cave has a vertical slope, whose characteristic cross‑section type is irregular. It can be entered without a permit, without basic cave‑tour equipment, by easy rock climbing.
In 2004 the cave was first called Törpe-zsomboly in the literature.
Research history
On 2 August 2004 Sarolta Borzsák edited a basic plan cave map with two longitudinal sections, based on the survey by Sarolta Borzsák and Csaba Egri. According to the cave‑map sheet, the cave is located in Nagykovácsin, in the 4772 cave‑cadastral area, and is 3 m long and 2.5 m deep. The 2004 registration sheet reads that the thoroughly surveyed cave is 3 m long, extends 3 m vertically, is 3 m deep and has a horizontal extent of 3 m. In the immediate surroundings of the cave there are few demolition debris from earlier investigations. According to the Danube–Ipoly National Park Directorate, the planned route of the western sector of the M0 motorway, between primary road 10 and primary road 1, variant B, approaches the Törpe-zsomboly to within about 30 m between the 89th and 90th kilometre sections.
