Trefort Street, 3
Trefort Street 3 forms part of the historic Trefort Garden, a university campus in Budapest's eighth district developed from the 1870s onward on the site of the former Füvészkert botanical garden, during the tenure of Ágoston Trefort as Hungary's minister of religion and public education, after whom the complex is named. The campus grew into a center of Hungarian scientific and humanities education, assembling buildings in differing historicist styles designed by different architects over subsequent decades, including a structure built for the university's Physiology Institute, designed by Antal Szkalnitzky, and the distinctive Gólyavár, or "Stork Tower," designed by Samu Pecz and completed in 1897-98. Today the Trefort Garden buildings, including the one at number 3, house the Eötvös Loránd University Faculty of Humanities, and the complex remains both a protected architectural ensemble and an active teaching campus in the heart of the city.
