The Turanga sanctuary is a very small botanical reserve of about five hectares in Ortaderesin rural district, Aktogay district, Karaganda region, near Lake Balkhash. It was created specifically to protect a stand of turanga, the desert poplar adapted to the saline, semi-desert conditions around the Balkhash basin and considered a relict of the region's ancient river and lake floodplains. Despite its small size, the reserve is ecologically notable because turanga groves of this kind have become uncommon in Kazakhstan's desert zone, reduced by changing water levels and land use around Balkhash and other inland water bodies. The sanctuary also supports steppe birds such as buzzards and various insects recorded within its grounds, but its core purpose remains the protection of this single distinctive tree community rather than broader wildlife conservation.
