Filatov House Museum – a memorial building named after the retired Russian officer Dmitriy Filatov, located in the city of Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Opened in 1868. It is situated on Mahmud Qoshgʻariy Street in Samarkand.

History

Dmitriy Filatov came to Central Asia in 1865 with a small caravan of sheep from Akmola. According to some sources, Filatov worked in the Russian expedition corps of Major General M.N. Chernyayev, who captured Tashkent. His task was to supply the troops with food, drinks, and military material. After spending three years in Tashkent and collecting sufficient funds, Filatov moved to Samarkand and spent the rest of his life there.

At Dmitriy Filatov’s initiative, a small wine‑producing enterprise was established in Samarkand, then part of the Russian Empire, in 1868. Within a short time, reports of the extraordinary taste of Samarkand wine spread worldwide. During his years in Uzbekistan, Filatov imported and tested nearly 40 grape varieties from Europe and other regions. He also gave high ratings to some local varieties and used them in production. In 1883, fifteen years after production began, at the International Exhibition of Wines and Cognacs in Paris, Filatov’s “Biishti” wine (named after the grape variety of the same name, the name translates as “paradise”) received a gold medal, taking into account his complete innovation. After this event, collectors from around the world began coming to Samarkand for this remarkable varietal wine. It was awarded a silver medal at the world wine competition held in Antwerp. In 1904, the only viticulture and winemaking school in all of Central Asia was opened in Samarkand.

When the Soviet government came to power, Filatov was forced to leave Samarkand, but he managed to hide his finest wines in the factory warehouses, where they were stored for several decades. Later, during renovation work, the hidden wines were discovered. Even after half a century, these wines had not lost their flavor; rather, they had further matured and acquired a rich taste. Now the collection of Filatov wines is kept in the winery museum of the factory. The winery museum and tasting room are located in a historic building erected at the end of the 19th century, in the house of the Russian merchant Dmitriy Filatov.
