The Vaskapui Passage Cave is one of the caves located in Pilisszentkereszt in the Pilis Mountains of the Danube–Ipoly National Park.

Description

The Vaskapui Passage Cave is located in the outskirts of Pilisszentkereszt, in a specially protected area. The two‑entrance cave lies on the ÉK side of the last large rock overhang above the Great Rock Gate of the Vaskapu rock. The cave, formed in Triassic limestone by layer‑parallel dissolution and freezing, is 7 m long and 3 m deep. The cave walls contain pea‑stones, whose fill consists of debris rock. The cave can be entered without a permit, with easy climbing and basic caving equipment, and is of negligible significance for further exploration.

In 1997 the cave was first called Vaskapui Passage Cave in the literature. The cave also appears in the literature under the name Passage Cave (Kraus 1997).

Research History

In 1997 Sándor Kraus drew a site map showing the geographic location of the Vaskapu caves. The map shows the geographic location of the Vaskapui Passage Cave (Passage Cave). On 4 May 1997 József Regős surveyed the cave, and then based on the survey Sándor Kraus drew the floor‑plan map and the cross‑section map of the Vaskapui Passage Cave on 12 May 1997. The maps present the cave at a scale of 1:50. The floor‑plan map shows the position of the cross‑section within the cave. The map plate marks the east direction. In Sándor Kraus’s 1997 report it is stated that the Vaskapui Passage Cave, unknown before 1997, had its map produced in 1997. The report includes the site map made in 1997.
