Amerigo Tot Museum
The Amerigo Tot Museum is one of the former museums in Pécs on Káptalan Street. The artist currently has no independent exhibition space in the city, and his works here can nowadays be seen in the permanent collection of the also Pécs JPM Modern Hungarian Picture Gallery.
History
Before the museum opened, in 1978 Amerigo Tot donated 13 works to Pécs. The exhibition of the Amerigo Tot Museum opened in 1984, when the city collection was enriched by another 12 pieces.
The works placed here by the artist, who moved to Italy as a youth, cover his entire life: from the Baptism (1938) relief created in the spirit of the Renaissance (Hungarian: újjászületés) under the influence of his fresh Italian experiences, through the mother‑earth types symbolising fertility (Pebble Women; the 1940s) to the Historical Ellipsis (1980), which decorates the chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Hungarians in the Roman St. Peter’s Basilica.
The museum originally (from 1984 to 2006) operated at 2 Káptalan Street in Pécs (in the same building as the JPM Zsolnay Museum).
From the autumn of 2011 for several years the collection could be viewed at the neighboring 4 Káptalan Street.
In March 2020 the exhibition titled Amerigo Tot and Pécs Sculpture opened, which has since been accessible as part of the permanent exhibition of the JPM Modern Hungarian Picture Gallery (Pécs, 5 Papnövelde Street).
