Aziz Mahmud Hüdayi Mosque
Aziz Mahmud Hüdayi Mosque, a historic mosque from the Ottoman Period located in the Aziz Mahmud Hüdayi Neighborhood of the Üsküdar district of Istanbul. It was commissioned by Asiye Hümaşah Sultan, the granddaughter of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, in the name of her third husband Aziz Mahmud Hüdayi. Construction of the mosque began in 1589 and it was opened for worship in 1595 after a six‑year building process. Architecturally, the mosque reflects Ottoman influences.
The mosque, which fell into ruin over time, was repaired in 1855 by Sultan Abdülmecid. Later, its minaret, which collapsed due to a lightning strike in 1910, was restored. In 1912 it underwent renovation under the leadership of Princess Fatma, daughter of Hıdiv İsmail Paşa, and in 1975 under the leadership of the General Directorate of Foundations. The mosque is currently undergoing a comprehensive restoration process.
It was originally built as a tekke in the original plan. Later the mosque, its kitchen, tomb, library, sultan’s private prayer room, fountain, dervish cells, sheikh’s house, bakery and bathhouse were added. The area where the mosque is located was referred to as Gülfem Hatun Neighborhood until the regulations of 2008. The prayer space is very close to the Ahmet Çelebi Mosque, which belongs to the Bektashi order of the Alevi. Every Sunday after the morning prayer and on Thursday after the night prayer, a dhikr program is organized by the Erenköy Congregation in the mosque.
