Budapest Galéria, housed on Lajos Street in the Óbuda district, functions as the city's dedicated venue for contemporary visual art. Rather than holding a permanent historical collection, it runs a changing program of temporary exhibitions, typically refreshed every couple of months, that cover painting, sculpture, photography, installation and multimedia work. Its programming leans toward art that engages current social and urban issues, and it is used deliberately as a launching point for younger and emerging artists alongside international group shows with a Central European focus. As part of the Budapest History Museum network, it complements the city's historical collections by giving contemporary practice a space of its own, distinct from the municipality's older fine-art holdings housed elsewhere in Óbuda.
