The Kassák Lajos Memorial Museum (short: Kassák Museum) presents an exhibition of works and writings by Hungarian writer, poet, and painter Kassák Lajos in the III district of Budapest.

History of the museum

Kassák Lajos, the leading artist of the Hungarian avant‑garde. It presents his literary and visual arts work, the permanent exhibition located on the first floor of the former Zichy Castle, which was established in 1976 as a branch of the Petőfi Literary Museum.

In the spring of 2000 another permanent exhibition opened from the legacy of 20th‑century Hungarian artists and writers.

In the avant‑garde field periodic exhibitions are often organized, which are also presented abroad. From 1976 to 2007 Ferenc Csaplár, a literary researcher, directed the museum, whose timeless merits lie in arranging, enriching the Kassák legacy and creating periodic exhibitions. After Csaplár’s death, Gábor Andrási, and from 2010 art historian Edit Sasvári became the museum’s director. From 1 November 2020 art historian Pál Szeredi Merse took over the institution’s leadership.
