Çifte Inn
Çifte Han or Borsa Hanı is a historic caravanserai located in the Sur district of Diyarbakır. The exact date of the caravanserai is unknown, but it is understood to be an Ottoman-era work from the 16th century. Çifte Han was originally conceived as a double caravanserai, but during the opening of the road the second one was demolished. Both caravanserais were built of cut basalt stone. The caravanserai, which was formerly used for exchange purposes, is now in a ruined state.
According to Şeyhmus Diken, the other name of the caravanserai is Bulgar Hanı. He explains that "in the 1850s, when the Ottoman administration noticed the anti-government activities of revolutionaries in Bulgaria, the Ottoman authorities captured 187 people and exiled them to Diyarbakır, one of the farthest points of the empire, sending the Bulgarians in five groups. The Bulgarians caused significant changes in the city. The arriving Bulgarians were provided with opportunities to sustain their lives during the day, including job opportunities. One of them came and took a place in this caravanserai, paid the rent regularly, and the owner of the caravanserai thought they were very honest, gave the rest to the Bulgarians, and gave the entire caravanserai to the Bulgarians. He gave it to others who could do various jobs."
